Within this section I have chosen to overview the course and the progress I have made.
At the beginning of the course I was not confident that I would be able to make a three minute animation. The task appeared to be too big as I had to be taught how to use the programming within a couple of weeks. Within the first few weeks of experimenting I began to gain confidence with my animating and after using the programmes regularly my confidence grew as I began to experiment to create my own style.
When researching for my project, I had a clear idea of the direction I wanted to take in order to gain inspiration for my project. I believe the two main inspirations from my research is Julian Opie and Simon's cat, as I believe I have infused the two styles whilst creating a new style of characterization that stays true to my aims of creating something minimalistic fairytale like and simple.
Now the course is coming to an end it is clear to see I have progressed a long way from the start of this process. Something i have definitely gained from this course is determination and tolerance for technology, and I'm extremely proud of the work I have produced as it displays the hard work I have put into my project and also shows my development throughout the weeks. Also throughout the course the Sussex practice tutors have helped with my development and have supported me throughout my project which I fully appreciate!

Overview and discussion of the software used:
The main programmes I have used over this project is FLASH AND ILLUSTRATOR. I have also used adobe photoshop and sound editing software 'Audacity'.
Adobe illustator has been an essential programme when creating my animation as I created all of my drawings and characters within the programme. Understanding how to use the tools and was simple and quick and through using the different tools I developed my own style. The style I have created in Illustrator is something I am proud of as I believe whilst drawing inspiration from people like 'Julian Opie' I have also created something that I believe to be unique.
Adobe Flash has been and interesting learning curve for me and after weeks of experimenting I understand the complexity of editing within flash but I feel more confident in creating an animation.
Adobe Photoshop has been a programme I have lightly touched upon when Illustrator could not help with an issue. I believe what is most useful when using photoshop is the fact you can isolate a part of an image and highlight it and move it to edit it.
Audacity is a free editing software I used as a back up in case flash wouldn't co-operate. The software has been easy to use and the editing tools are simple to use and manipulate. Overall the programme has been a useful back up for my project.

Comments on Exploring flash CS5
When I begun the intermediate digital media course the project that was given to me seemed daunting and impossible because I have never had experience with Flash before.
What I found interesting when exploring flash for the first time was how simplistic the programme was. The simple timeline and commands meant I could focus on learning the set number of instructions and start experimenting.
Actually creating a 2-3 second animation proved harder as creating an object and moving it meant spending hours manipulating the scene to ensure you created a piece of animation that is believable.
A key point I have learn't through flash is Believability is the key to animation. This idea is something I have struggled with when animating as being able to make character move realistically has been hard because I drew everything from scratch and in doing some moving a character to walk etc. is harder as it involves moving each segment of the character to be moved individually.
Editing sound with flash has also proven to be hard. When experimenting in class, I used CS4 but on my laptop I use CS5 and the difference is huge. CS5 has proven to be more vague and difficult to edit with as none of the commands can be found or are easy to use. Although I intend to persevere with Flash when editing my sound, I will use the free sound editing software 'Audacity' as a back up programme to ensure I finish the sound element of my project.

Discussing sound for my project:
When creating and drawing my animation I believed that the sound element should be a mellow accompaniment instead of an overbearing tone over my project. When considering what sound to use, I believe at the beginning of the piece I should introduce my animation with a mellow piece of music i.e. with some soft guitar/piano music.
After introducing my animation I have chosen to interject sound effects to accent some of the characters movements to highlight what the characters are doing.
- A concern I hold over the use of music and sound effects is the fact that I don't want to use effects for every movement as i believe it would overload the animation so I will have to ensure an appropriate amount is used.

The main protagonists within my animation:
To present the evolution of my project and the development of my characters, I have included a few screen shots of my main character within my animation to present the progression throughout the past few weeks, and want now is my signature.
The fairytale of the frog prince:
Within my animation I explore the ideology of love and how a life can stem from such a thing. I also wanted to include a fairytale styled element within the narrative as it is something accessible for all to understand and believe and it also creates child like imagery for the audience and brings a childish side in the audience as they connect with the story line and the hand drawn 'child like' animation.
The frog prince:
The Frog Prince, is a fairy tale, best known through the Brothers Grimm's written version; traditionally it is the first story in their collection. In the tale, a spoiled princess reluctantly befriends a frog (possibly meeting him after dropping a gold ball into his pond), who magically transforms into a handsome prince. Although in modern versions the transformation is invariably triggered by the princess kissing the frog.
The idea of a 'princess' kissing a frog who then turns into a prince interests me as I believe the storyline would work well within the narrative when linking the idea of evolution from a frog to a human being whilst also intertwining the idea of love.
I have chosen to use this fairytale as inspiration and I will adopt the idea of a kiss from the female protagonist turns the frog into a man to my narrative to add a fairytale child like twist to my animation.

Commenting on my digital media proposal:
Below, I have entered my digital media proposal and I have chosen to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of my proposal and over ideas.
A comment I received about my written work and especially the beginning of the proposal is that it appears awkward and disjointed from other sections. Although I am comfortable writing in such a style I fully agree and with the comment because when reading the piece back the beginning section and the ending were written as if they were in two seperate essays, purely because the ending focuses on planning and logical steps that are needed to be taken in order to carry out the project. What is apparent is that I was far more comfortable writing in a logical clear direct style that allowed me to speak to the reader in a basic but academic way. If I were to write proposal again I am sure I would be more confident in being able to write a more clear and direct proposal.
I believe a strength within my proposal and my project has been the research. From the start I have carried out research in order to gain a wider understanding of the style and approach I wish to take for my project. An element I am particulary proud of is the style of animation/ character I have adopted. I have created a style which adopts an opie style of facial expressions with a minimalistic twist in order to allow the audience to associate with the characters because of their simplistic appeareance and nature. I would like to consider my animation as a canvas in which the audience can imprint their own lives on my project, as I believe they would have a far greater understanding of the nature of my animation.
A criticism I received for my planning of my project is the organization of my folder system for my proposal. I completely agree that the labeling and organization of my folder system is too vague for someone to follow and understand. I will definitely be re-organizing the folders and labeling each document and thing within my folder correctly and efficiently so that a person will be able find whatever they need quickly ad easily.
Chloe Montrose- Intermediate Digital Media – Project proposal:
1842words:
The brief I have chosen is to create a three-minute animation. The idea I have chosen to present through my animation is the idea of the ‘rhythm of life’. The ideology of ‘evolution’ is an underlying motif throughout my animation; as the main protagonist evolves into different beings till eventually he falls in love and the two characters ultimately begin the rhythm of life again through having a child. Using the idea of life being a constant rhythm will hopefully allow the narrative to flow successfully throughout each scene and each characters transformation.
Through the introduction of CGI and other effects I believe animation has lost it’s purity. Although some may argue effects like CGI create a more realistic experience for an audience member I believe it in fact makes the experience false and alienates the viewer from the narrative. To take animation back to its most pure form I believe hand drawn cartoonist animations are more realistic and effective in engaging the audience with the story. It engages an audience through creating a story any person can relate to through its simplicity and the use of minimalistic elements. The idea of a human’s evolution throughout their life appeals to everyone and I want to present this idea in its most basic and pure form in order to engage the audience. I believe my animation will present a romantic ideal of life most people hold and I want to present the idea that an audience member can imprint their life onto my animation through its simplicity.
The advert “Rhythm of Life – Evolution” by Guinness beer has greatly inspired my ideas when approaching my project. The advert shows the evolution of life in reverse and presents and innovative way of blending realism and animation together. Although the advert isn’t presented in the style of animation I want to create, the concept of the evolution of life appeals to me because I want to present the simplicity of the rhythm of a characters life. (See appendix 10 and 11 and blog for more information)
When researching animation for historical context Walt Disney’s early animations have particularly inspired me when creating an animated style for myself. The cartoon ‘Steam Boat Willie’ has been highly inspirational because of its simplistic but effective nature. I want to use Disney’s early work as an approach towards my project as I believe it will allow me to convey my animation in its truest and most simplistic form. (Appendix 12)
I believe what makes Disney’s early work so successful is the fact the animation is presented in a hand drawn fashion. The style allows the audience to appreciate the unique characters expressions and the simple narrative presented within the story. (See appendix 9 and blog for more information) Walt Disney deconstructed the idea of animation by suggesting “Animation offers a medium of story telling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world” (Walt Disney) As Disney suggests, animation offers a ‘medium of story telling’ that can conveys a series of meanings and emotions along side it, I wish to take this idea and help construct the meaning of evolution whilst also being able to present the information to all types of demographics. In regards to the style of Disney’s early work, the cartoonist impression is effective in focusing the audience on the narrative. When I vision the outcome of my animation I want to leave a romantic impression on the audience through presenting an animation which has a fairytale like state within the narrative and a romantic view on life. Disney’s animations create a romantic ideal for their audience through presenting pure hand drawn sketches of characters that live in a fairytale state and presenting animation in such a form is effective in engaging the audience in the story that Disney creates.
After researching an historical example of animation I wanted to try find an example of a present day animation that has a similar style. An inspirational series of animations that have made an impact on me is ‘Simon’s Cat’. (Appendix 13)
The concept of story telling presented in Simon Tofield’s animations is simple and syntagmatic. The idea that animation can be effortlessly simple but also be effective is shown in the image below, as it’s a perfect example in representing the simple hand drawn animations that I greatly admire. The simple sketching with minimal features enhances the bold eyes drawn for the characters expressing their emotions in a more vivid fashion for the audience. I believe what makes ‘Simon’s Cat’ so popular is that its structure is engaging for the audience as it strips itself of any complicated effects and story telling and instead focuses on the key points of the narrative. (See appendix 7 and blog for more information)
Brad Bird and American animator once said, “Animation is about creating the illusion of life”(Brad Bird). The suggestion that an animation can portray an; ‘illusion of life’ translates into my project but from a ‘surreal cartoonist’ perspective. The artist ‘Julian Opie’s’ work creates surreal cartoonist artwork. The image below shows a series of faces created by Opie. What I believe is effective about his style of work is the idea that the characters have a certain set structure to their facial expressions. Their faces are drawn in a minimalistic fashion, and I want to apply a similar technique towards my animations as like Opie I want to allow the audience to be able to relate to characters within the story.
(Appendix 14)
It is clear from looking at the image above Opie manipulates the simplicity of the black and white style to allow the viewer to focus on the characters feelings and it is clear that the characterization is achieved by using very few elements.
I have chosen to approach my animation with a simplistic angle whilst also incorporating my research into my chosen style of animation. Opie has particularly inspired my style of character animations, as I believe using a similar technique to Julian Opie would allow my audience to relate to the characters. (See appendix 6 and blog for more information) I would like for most of my animation to be presented in black and white with only certain amount of objects being shown in colour in order to represent what is symbolic within the story line. Also using black and white with only hints of colour encourages the audience to focus on the specifics of the animation. For instance when the two protagonists fall in love I want to create a visual suggestion for the audience by animating red love hearts within the scene being blown between the two characters to present the amorous feelings between them.
Throughout my research and technical experiments, I have recorded my work within a digital media blog. In doing so it has shown me my strengths and weaknesses within flash experimentation and it has also been able to highlight work that has become my inspiration.
(Appendix 15,16,17)
Due to the constraints of the word limit, I have chosen to include the three images above as an example of my technical experiment, (see blog for more experimentation). The images above are of the main characters of my animation. I experimented with tracing and brush tools to manipulate the human’s facial features in order to create minimal facial expressions in, an ‘Opie’ style. I believe using a basic black and white outline helps to in keep with the tone of my animation, and I also believe it gives me animation a unique stance.
Both the equipment I have chosen to use and the budget I have created within my proposal are both simple and minimal. I propose to use adobe flash, illustrator and Photoshop software printing, sound and disk burning equipment for my project along side using the basic equipment such as CD/DVD’s, pens and paper. My proposed budget stands at fifteen pounds. I have set aside this amount for my project in order to cover the costs of printing, CD burning and stationery. I have also planned for the outcome that I might need to spend more than proposed so I have set aside some money to ensure I can cover the costs with my budget.
When planning a time scale for my project I believe in regards to a week-by-week schedule week five will involve me finishing my proposal and creating a storyboard and time line for my animation. I will begin to create my animation in week six using Adobe flash software and I will create the characters first so I will be able to apply them to each key scene. Within the seventh week I aim to create the titles for my animation as I aim to use kinetic typography within my story. I assume this process will be time consuming, as I will need to ensure the typography fits well within the story and also timed correctly with the sound I will choose to use. In the eighth week I want to focus on the sound element of my project, although I haven’t reached a conclusion as to what my sound will be, I do want to use sound as a highlighting technique to coincide with the characters actions and feelings. I believe the sound should not overwhelm the animation but instead compliment the story. Whilst focusing on the sound element of my project I also want to ensure I have applied all of the flash effects and motion tweens and other extra effects into the animation. I believe the ninth week is crucial in regards to reviewing the animation as what I have produced. I have allowed time for any parts of the project I feel are not working so that I can address and adjust the issue. The tenth week will be purely dedicated towards tweaking the issues that have been raised. In the eleventh twelfth and thirteenth week I will be working on finalising my animation and completing the project so that within the fourteenth and fifteenth week I am able to publish, burn and hand in my work ready for the deadline.
